Environment resets to default

Post by macosxguru »

I am trying to setup a writing environment.

I have typewriter scrolling on.
I have turned off the ruler, the toolbar, and palettes.
I have check spelling as you type turned on.
I have paragraph focus mode turned on.

I edit plain text files in Nisus Writer Express.

Why do the changes I made not stick over restarts?
On restart, everything goes back to default and I have to redo this again?

Am I doing something wrong?

I'm sorry you're having trouble with your text editing and view settings macosxguru. Let's see what we can do to help you.

First let's confirm that you're editing the settings correctly. Any time you open a plain text file, Nisus Writer will consult your "Plain Text Template". All the settings from that template file will be applied to the loaded text. That includes the default text formatting, but also view settings like whether the ruler is visible. You can edit the Plain Text Template by following these steps:

1. Open your Nisus Writer preferences.
2. Switch to the "New File" pane.
3. Switch to the "Advanced" tab.
4. From the "Template File" popup menu choose "Plain Text Template".
5. Click the "Open For Editing" button.
→ The template is loaded as a regular document window.
6. Edit the template document however you like, save it, and close it.

Any plain text files you open will now use the settings you established in the steps above.

Getting back to your problem, were you editing your Plain Text Template in that way? If you were already editing the proper template, then something else must be wrong. Please let us know if that's the case and we can continue to explore your problem.

Thank you for the help.

I was not editing the template file. I was editing a particular text file and was surprised that the settings were not sticky over restarts. My bad.

Your suggestions solved that problem for me. I edited the Plain Text Template and now it behaves exactly how I set it up. Thanks for your help.
