manual

I just bought the last version of NWPro. thinking that things would appear more or less in the same way as in the precedent version only with technical ameliorations, (the atmosphere of Christmas I guess...) I always forget the motto of our time: “change everything, change for if you don't you will appear obsolete. Specially in the appearances of what you produce.”

I guess I cannot get back the NWPro precedent version which I barely managed to use approximately. Question: anything explaining the changes in regard with the preceding version ? If not, one more year to get acquainted tic the program, sorry for the tone of desperation.

Happy Christmas.

O.K. I may have exaggerated a little bit.Library for styles remains a very complex thing in Nisus and I could not manage it already in the precedent version. So I will go on avoiding the highways of the app as I got used to do. I ca more or less do without a library style though for every document I I rework notes, or main styles from time to time.

The paragraph border palette shows no option for one line only, left, right, above or below, as it did before. I hope there is some place where this is still possible for it is very useful when presenting a margin on one side in the document.

Before... it was easy to write the name of the font you chose, now, in the tiny window you have to roll down all the names before you reach Times or Times New Roman, no way to shorten this ?

G’day, Yohanan et al

I’m sorry you’re finding some aspects of Nisus Writer frustrating.

You can always revert to a previous version if you wish:–

<https://nisus.com/pro/versions.php>

There you will also find the Release Notes for each version, listing all the changes since the previous version.

But, rather than revert, it’s probably better if you can be a bit more specific about your problem so that people on the forum can help you resolve any issues you might have. I agree that some aspects of Styles can be a bit confusing at times, so I wouldn’t necessarily be the best person to help you with all of it. But someone will!

With respect to paragraph borders, I haven’t checked this in detail, but it seems that clicking on a border in the “Edges to modify” section of the Paragraph Borders Palette toggles its applicability (blue vs grey). It’s not immediately apparent that this is what you need to do, and you need to use more precise positioning of the cursor than in clicking on a larger button.

On the subject of fonts, it seems you can’t now type in a font name in the Character Palette. I agree this is something you should be able to do. One way to streamline things a bit is to use Font Book (in your Applications folder) to create your own Collections that contain particular fonts you favor. (For example, you might have certain preferences when it comes to sans-serif fonts or to fixed-width fonts.) These Collections appear in the Font drop-down menu in the Character Palette. Once you’ve set up these Collections, you shouldn’t have to scroll much to find one that suits the purpose in hand.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Adrian

Typing the font name in the character palette works for me. :?

What might be confusing is that there are two modes "Expanded" and "Condensed". The latter has a box (space) that you can more obviously type into. The former allows you to click into the list. If you start typing, the selection will move to select the first partial match, and then skip to the next as you type more. Of course the chosen font collection needs to include the name you are looking for.

Adrian's suggestions for managing fonts are still good ideas.

G’day, Philip et al

Thanks for explicating the font situation, Philip. I had in fact looked at both the Condensed and Expanded Modes but for some reason missed the fact that, although the fontname field appears as a drop-down menu in the former, one can still overtype the name there. (That was probably the case in the previous version, but it’s amazing how little attention one pays to the nitty-gritty when it just works.) I don’t think I ever knew the trick with the latter.

But, now that I look at this again, I find the behavior irritating. If I click on the Condensed Mode option, nothing in the Character Palette is selected, nor does an insertion point cursor appear there, yet typing does nothing — neither in the Character Palette nor in the body of the document. In the absence of visual cues in the Palette, I would have expected the result of any further typing to be manifested in the document proper.

Cheers,
Adrian

Thank you Adrian and Philip
Fact is that when I opened the paragraph border palette, in the Edges to modify I was not able to select only one of the four possible borders of a paragraph or a text. My mistake was that I have to select the desired line in the first square and in the same time, the thickness of the lines. I probably tried each of these two with no result. Problem solved, sorry for my somewhat rigid reaction.
As for the Expanded and condensed, for the moment, I cannot find where this is available. But I discovered the Recent font in the pop menu and this helps.
Have a nice day.
Yohanan

See those three dots to the right of the title bar in the Character Palette? If you click on them, you are presented with a little drop-down menu that (among other things) allows you to choose between Condensed Mode and Expanded Mode.

Adrian

Many thanks, I can find it and use it. And let me apologise for the late in night critics of the new product. It looks truly fine and easier to use.
Sincerely,
Yohanan
