All of a sudden a colon parenthesis is not automagically converted to a smiley anymore, and I can't remember having changed any prefs or my template ...
I thought this effect was just a part of OS X's builtin text transformation feature?

Any hints? (I don't like many transformations, but this one is handy ... )

That particular text transformation is one of our default QuickFix corrections. There's a few things to check:

1. Make sure the language of your text/document is as you would expect. QuickFix is language sensitive, so corrections in one language can be different than that of another language.

2. Check your NWP's QuickFix preferences to make sure typo corrections are enabled for your language(s), and that the smiley correction still exists.
