I would like to be able to link to a file from another app, much as I can hyperlink to an internet url. Is that possible? If so, how?

Use the Hyperlink menu item, located at the bottom of the Insert Menu.

It says link destination with no browse button to find the file. If I have a url, I simply paste it in. What do I do in the case of file somewhere else on my computer? And let's say the link works, does it bring up the file in the parent application, for instance, an excel file via excel?

As a link destination, you have to use a path such as file:///Users/me/Documents/testfile.txt. When you click on this kind of link, the file will be shown by the Finder. If you want it to be opened by the default application (e.g. Safari for html, Preview for pdf), try the macro posted here.

thanks for the help. This is certainly a feature that could be added to future versions of NWP.

To make a link to a file via Insert Hyperlink, drag the file from the finder into the "Link Destination" box, and prepend "file:/" to the text that is created. Clicking the link will reveal the file in the finder.

Got it. But it would be much more intuitive to simply put a "browse" button there, find the file in the finder, and click.

Lou Lesko and Martin each posted a macro to add file links at http://www.nisus.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=3665.
