NWP documents don't remember Apple Dock status

Hi,
I'm currently working with about 15 NWP documents open, and about 12 of those I keep in the Apple Dock. (I find this convenient because some are long, and this way I don't need to wait for them to open if I need a quick look at them.)

Problem:
Whenever there's a need to quit Nisus (or restart the OS; like in a power failure), the 12 in the Dock lose their status, and are all just piled up in the main window on restart. I then have to move them individually to the Dock again.

Is there any way to get them to remember their Dock status, the same way they remember that they're open (and their size, and window position otherwise)?

G'day, wF et al

I haven't tested what happens to Nisus files in the Dock after a computer Restart, but they do survive there on my computer after a Quit and relaunch of NWP. They will, of course, have to be relaunched in order for subsequent calls to the Dock to open their windows almost immediately without the delay attendant upon the execution of an Open command.

A bit of clarification here: What I have just said applies to files deliberately dragged to the Dock. If a file enters the Dock via a Minimize operation, it will disappear from the Dock whenever the document's window is closed, howsoever that might happen (eg, Close, Quit, computer Restart, computer crash).

One approach would be to create a special folder somewhere (named something like "Projects" or "Nisus Dox") and place that folder in the Dock. You could then drag and drop Nisus documents (or aliases to them, which would be my preference) onto that folder in the Dock. The folder approach saves room in the Dock while still having your documents easily accessible. This folder and its contents should survive a computer Restart.

If you prefer to have the individual files showing in the Dock, rather than hidden in a folder there, parking all your Dock-destined files in a special folder in the Finder is still a good idea. If for some reason the individual files disappear from the Dock, you can just go to the special folder in the Finder, select all its contents and drag them back to the Dock.

Cheers,
Adrian

Thanks for the post about this issue withoutFeathers. It would definitely be nice if Nisus Writer remembered which document windows were minimized in the Dock. I'll file a request that Nisus Writer should restore this windowing state after relaunching the app.

Thanks very much Martin. I guess I should have asked this three years ago, and then it would be in version 3, which I'm now demoing (and will buy, I've decided). :) I look forward to it appearing in a future version.

@Adryan,
Thanks for that interesting suggestion. But I'm using the "Minimize" variety, because I regularly change which documents are in the doc, on the fly, as I work. Unfortunately after a bit of experimenting I don't think your suggestion is going to help with that specific problem.

But thank you again for it, because I may try using it in parallel, as a way to collect secondary files that I use sometimes but don't have open at the moment.

We just released version 3.2.1 which will properly restore document window minimization state when relaunching the app.

Wow, that's service! Less than a week I think! :D . (Probably accidentally hit before the release, but even so!)

My first test of 3.2.1:
Works.

Plus, I didn't mention, but when the Dock minimizing status was lost on app restart, the placement in the windows (after recovery from the Dock) was of course also forgotten. And so now both Dock minimizing and window positions are remembered. Great!

Thank you!
