Just to add on: Another (probably unrelated) curly-quote problem is that Nisus uses the open-quote form before numerals, where nine times out of ten one is not beginning a quotation but abbreviating a year, writing something like '99 instead of 1999 (this requires the close-quote form).

crash, crash, crash

How stable is Nisus Writer Express, really, in everyday use? Please share your experiences. I have found footnotes to be a constant source of trouble in Nisus. After purchasing it for my academic work, it hasn't lived up to its billing as an everyday, reliable word processor. I've experienced crash ...

I don't think anyone is (or at least I'm not) surprised or upset that there is to be a "Pro" product. My concern is more with the fact that long-promised and oft-requested core word-processor features (like TOC and indexing) are now part of this new "higher-end" product with an u...

I bought Nisus Express with the promise that outlines were just around the corner. Now, not only are they not mentioned, but it looks like the upgrade requires buying an entirely new iteration. I agree with this sentiment, and I'm somewhat bothered that the pricing and upgrade path are not spelled ...

Not to disagree for the sake of disagreement, but it's not very helpful simlpy to pile on with personal experiences of the program's stability. I've also had serious and repeated crashing problems with even the most recent version of NWX, especially when using footnotes extensively. The application'...

To pile on, I'd add another minor scrolling problem: moving the cursor to the beginning of a line with Cmd + Left Arrow changes the scroll position of the document. This should be fixed.

3.0 plans?

Any update on what features are planned for 3.0 and/or when to expect it? I know this is sometimes a delicate question, but it's been a while and any information would help us users make our plans.

thanks for replying

I appreciate the frankness and friendliness of Dave's reply, even though it's extremely vague and noncommittal. And though he's asking us to take a lot on faith I've gone ahead and signed up for an Express license. Now I just hope that my license will extend to the new version that contains the feat...

agreed

I'd like to second this request. The major obstacle between me and committing myself to Nisus is the poor communication about a feature and release schedule. If there are certain features not present in the current Nisus that I need for my work, as it stands now, I have no way of knowing if I can re...

license

Apologies if this has been asked before, but I can't find the answer. Will 3.0 be a free upgrade for 2.5/2.6 licensees? Will future versions also be, or when/how is it decided to require license renewals?

page vs. draft

How about just allowing hiding margins and headers/footers in page view? I think draft view serves a little different purpose, but it would be good to be able to compose text in page view with a little less wasted space.

Interesting. I've confirmed that Pages and TextEdit both have this bug, while Mariner Write and Microsoft Word behave correctly. It looks like relying on Apple's text-processing frameworks is sometimes a bad idea.

improper line-wrapping

As I'm assessing Nisus Express's usability for the kind of academic work that I do, I've come across a small problem with its line-wrapping. As required by (some) standards of quotation, my documents frequently mark changes within quotation marks, even single-letter changes, using square brackets []...

TOC/Index features

So, these features were "high on your list" in March 2005. Where are they? When will a version containing these features be released so that I can evaluate it? I like you guys and your software, really I do, but I do not see clear communication about a release schedule on this forum, I see...

deal-breakers

Just chiming in to say that the current reasons I -- and the other academic writers I know -- can't use Nisus Express are lack of TOC and indexing. These are the most important features for long documents that are missing, and ought to be there already.
