Linkback sounds a lot like the old Publish & Subscribe from System 7 days. Working as a jobbing designer, it used to a really useful system. An Illustrator file could be updated, and because it was 'published' it would automatically udate in a Quark layout if it was 'subscribed' to. I think InDe...

Ooer. Sorry I didn't get back sooner. I've been out and about today... I don't know how I got it to work. In my version (v.2.1.1) the QuickFix panel lets me check or uncheck the "Use Smart Punctuation" consistently. One question: Your system language has been set to British? I have no idea...

Smart quotes was one of the feature requests I made early on when I started using NWE.

I have to say it's working for me - and I'm using British English (how I loath that term!).

But what does the British Parliament know anyway? :D

Being the pedant I am I still refer to the flag up a pole as the Flag, and a Jack on a boat - jack is a maritime word meaning flag. So, I guess it means the same whatever you call it.

Not for me, nope. I've tried writing books as separate chapters. 8) Like I said, I don't do long text files. It was an idea. I wondered whether the putative TOC palette (with many of the functions of the Document Manager) might be able to handle some of the plot thread work - somehow. Perhaps that'...

Speaking as one who doesn't use NWE for long document work, may I make an observation? For those that require long document work, would there be any mileage in letting NWE work with multiple documents as if they were one? I mean, if I wrote a novel (maybe one day  ) I would be inclined to work...

Thanks, Ryan. That's great to know.

Another nail in the coffin of MS Office on my systems...

Dictionaries

I posted what I thought was a bug to Nisus the other day. It concerned am incorrect spelling of a word in the British English dictionary. (If you must know, it was the word "rigorously", which was flagged up as "rigourously" by the dictionary.) Anyway, a helpful bod from Nisus po...

My language is set to English (New Zealand) and British English spelling. I don't like having the US or UK flags, but at least the spelling is correct when the Union jack is displayed :) Okay, I'm a fully paid-up member of the pedantry society, but the Union Jack is only so called when it's attache...

Hi! I usually find this happens when I'm opening files from a third party who seems completely oblivious to the language in which he's typing. I also find the Australian flag appearing, generally on odd words here and there. My solution is to select all the text and remind NWE that I am in fact work...

I know I might be teaching people to suck eggs, but NWE allows you to set or change a shortcut keystroke for any menu command. I have set one to show and hide invisibles. Likewise, the page/draft view already has a menu shortcut to toggle between them. If you don't like it you can change it. Maybe i...

I agree with Scott. Keep the UI simple. Let the user concentrate on the task at hand, and keep as much usable space as possible. Word is horrible at this, with buttons and palettes and nonsense.

But it didn't, which is why I flagged it up.

One for the pot, perhaps.

Thanks, Mark. As ever, I fiddled around after firing off my problem to the list and I found the solution you mentioned. What seems odd, though, is that you have to turn it off in two places for the options to stick. I generally want the spelling check on for all new documents, and only occasionally ...
