Re: Nisus/Apple breaking at non-syllables, off by 1 letter

I'm not seeing this problem. I tried on OSX 10.11 with the settings you gave, in a small test document, and "challenging" is hyphenated correcting as challeng-ing. Would you be able to send us your document, to see if the problem depends on the full document? Thanks, but alas, I'm not free to do th...

Nisus/Apple breaking at non-syllables, off by 1 letter

Hi, I'm working on a long book, and recently changed from OS 10.6 to 10.11. I now discover what appears to be a bug in the Apple hyphenation in El Capitan: it's sometimes off by one letter, and always in the same way. An example would be 'challenging'. The correct hyphenation, which used to be there...

Re: Autosave minutes -- from my last save, or absolute?

Can it be changed? Almost certainly not. Most likely an Apple thing, as the NSDocument class which handles this kind of thing is wired to autosave on various events, and application switching is one of them. Definitely annoying. But I'm not having it happen just by application switching, as far as ...

Re: Autosave minutes -- from my last save, or absolute?

Thank you, I now have Autosave set to 30 minutes, and I manually save regularly every few minutes, so I almost never see Autosave. One exception, which I consider a bug -- I don't know if it's Apple's bug, or if you can control it. It's perhaps related to this: I should say that autosave timing is n...

Autosave minutes -- from my last save, or absolute?

Hi, I'm attempting to discern if Autosave is working correctly (I've had some trouble understanding it), and to do that I need to know what it's designed to do. Question: If I set Autosave to 30 minutes, should this 30 minutes always be measured from my last manual save, or is it absolute? Examples:...

withoutFeathers - Hope that helps - ninjagame Hi ninjagame, Thank you for your attention to this matter. :) None of your suggestions fixed it... :D ...but working through them jogged my memory and caused me to understand what's going on. In short, for anyone else who has this problem, it seems that...

Soft hyphenation now uses en-dash?

Hi, I just upgraded the Mac Os to 10.11 from 10.6.8, and Nisus itself to 2.1.5. The main problem: Soft hyphens now insert an incorrect longer dash, I believe an en-dash, instead of a true hyphen. This is annoying. Why would Apple suddenly decide to throw out 500 years of typography? Plus, hyp...

Re: PDF prints to boxes instead of font characters

You've already listed some good ideas on how to possibly resolve your problem. I think clearing out your font caches is a very good idea, as corrupt font caches have been known to cause these kinds of problems. Please let us know how it goes. After a lot of reading online and some dead ends, I appe...

Re: PDF prints to boxes instead of font characters

Hi, Update: I haven't solved this, but it's not a Nisus Issue. It happens only with a single font -- New Century Schoolbook. It happens with that font also in TextEdit (my first test of TextEdit had a different font, so I didn't see the issue). NCS is a truetype font, it validates in FontBook, I've ...

PDF prints to boxes instead of font characters

Hi, Two weeks ago I upgraded my OS from 10.6.8 to 10.11.6, and my Nisus Pro to 2.1.5. Everything else seems to work normally throughout the OS, and with Nisus, but I just tried printing and exporting to PDF (from .rtf), and I get all boxes. 1. This shows in Print Preview, as well as Export. 2. This ...

Re: Lulu complains Mac Quartz PDF inferior, says use Acrobat

Hi Featherless I'm intrigued about publishing books out of NWP. Might I ask what sort of books do you publish? Cheers, Geoff Well...that's a pretty open-ended question, and maybe hard for me to answer — "what sort" — without some more guidance about what you mean. And perhaps the answer is out of t...

Re: Lulu complains Mac Quartz PDF inferior, says use Acrobat

I regularly use NWP > PDF for 100 to 300 page books. Some of these include header graphics, multiple columns, multiple colors, foot note separator lines, etc. These have been printed through traditional printers on digital web and offset presses without any issues. Mike Interesting. Were these all ...

NWP to PDF for book printing - use PDF-X?

Hi, Anyone know the rationale for using PDF-X, via Preview, rather than just "Save as PDF", for a PDF that's going to be uploaded to Lulu and used for book printing? I see by reading on various sites, including Apple, that PDF-X is supposed to be for high-end book printing. Anybody experienced in th...

Re: Lulu complains Mac Quartz PDF inferior, says use Acrobat

I would wonder if it might not be a unique combination of something in the Mac engine and Lulu's set up, not exclusively an issue with the Mac engine. Otherwise it seems the "noise" about Mac's engine would be far greater given the number of folks who generate books with it. Mike Thanks Mike. This ...

Re: Lulu complains Mac Quartz PDF inferior, says use Acrobat

Interesting topic, WF. :) I have not used this service myself. Have you asked in one of the Lulu forums? There is an old thread there about creating a PDF on a Mac. The oldest post is from 2008 and the last one I found is from 2010. That in itself is rather strange. :? Thanks Þorvarður, I've recent...
