Slower than Molasses In January

The new document import is SLOW. Even simple one page documents take an extraordinary amount of time to import. I've got one of the latest Macbook Pro laptops, so it cannot be a matter of speed of the machine or memory. Its got a 7200 RPM hard drive. It is just SLOW. The speed of import must be fixe...

The public beta is much worse with Mathtype Equations than the previous version. In fact, it is unusable.

This was reported on the beta. It was announced that it would be fixed before shipping the final/officially shipped version. Never happened.

NWP does not adjust the baseline. It has been so long since I have used MW documents (sometime around Word 6.0), that I haven't tried to import such documents into NW or NWP.

Re: Mathtype Problems

Quote: we need a keyboard shortcut for raising and/or lowering the baseline. Menu Bar > Format > Baseline > Raise Baseline/Lower Baseline. In my NWPro they have the keyboard shortcuts of option-command-r and option-command-l respectively. I think those shortcuts were assigned by Nisus. These comman...

Mathtype Problems

Quote: One thing I remembered: there is a bug in the NWP beta that prevents double-clicking from editing equations on Intel machines. This will be fixed before release. This wasn't fixed before release. You still need a better way to address the raising and lowering of the baseline for equations. Th...

Re: next release, patience

It is definitely fixed in the next release, please be patient. Over three months to fix a major bug, is too much long. A beta release to fix this issue, could have been distributed without any major cost. A dot release would have been preferable. If a small company wishes to remain competitive agai...

I think I need to digest all this and see if I can come up with a workable workflow.

I posted on the Adobe User to User forum. Thomas Phinney of Adobe Systems responded and does say that the method Apple and Nisus is using is technically correct from a unicode point of view. However, they special case the Symbol font so that these problems don't arise. To conserve 20 years of mathem...

Microsoft Word is not Cocoa based, Unicode, OS X application. It's not so much that word does it "incorrectly", as it does it in an antiquated manner. No. The problem is you are using Apple's technology and I think Apple is doing it wrong. InDesign is unicode aware and has no problem with...

These work arounds are not workable solutions when one needs to work with people that write Mathematics using Word (of various versions and various platforms) and other programs that generate rtf files. The symbol font should work as the symbol font always has. This is a bug that needs fixing, not w...

No, the sigma is the greek lowercase s. In fact none of the Symbol fonts characters seem to be working. Not for the Apple supplied Symbol font nor the Euclid Symbol font are working properly. However, my Mathematical Pi font works fine.

Singing the missing sigma blues.

I created a blank document using Nisus Writer 2.5 under Tiger 10.4.2. I typed the single letter s formatted with the Symbol font. No sigma appears on the screen just the letter s. When printed the letter s appears. When the document is saved as an rtf and opened in Word, a sigma appears.

NW 2.5 is using 76 MB on my machine 10.4.2 without doing a thing. OTOH, I never believe MS or Apple on what a minimum system should be 256 MB wasn't adequate under OS 9, no less OS X. That said 76 MB for a WP that has done nothing but launch is a bit much. However, it doesn't use the CPU when not in...

Because of all of the different font issues in scientific writing, I rarely use styles. I have typeset technical reference journals, my own lectures notes, problem sets, exams using framemaker. Having many different fonts is not a reason not to use characters styles, but is a good reason to use cha...
