Another option
Another option if you know a little LaTeX (!), is LaTeX Equation Editor, a small but very nicely drafted application which just makes equations, nothing else.
It'll generate either PDF or TIFF.
Trouble is, its a bit redundant until NWE gets proper graphics support.
