In Preferences » General » Other, the preference for autochecking new versions can be turned off.

Problem solved (I hope) by inserting an empty page at the end, so that the expanding footnote has "somewhere to go".

Nisus crashed today when I was typing a footnote at the bottom of a page and the text ought to have flowed over to the next page. Retried a few times with the same result. Solution found by digging around in System Preferences / Printers & Fax: Apparently the default page size had reverted to US Letter. Sorry for bothering you people.

Page Setup doesn't stick to Nisus New File
I opened Nisus New File from the preferences, chose A4 in Page Setup and saved. New documents nevertheless open in US Letter format.
